“THAT LIGHTBULB MOMENT
Carbon Fibre (CF) is often thought of as a very modern day material but that is not the case. It was in fact invented in 1870. A few years later Thomas Edison used a carbon fibre derived from burnt cotton or bamboo fibres in his experiments to find a suitable light bulb filament (CF proved to be unsuccessful by the way). Fast forward 100years and the material was ‘rediscovered’ and a process to use it was developed shortly after.
The key year for CF was 1981 when F1 used the material in a race car for the first time. Engineers picked up on the possibilities and its use mushroomed. Sport. aviation, auto, space travel, medical and military are just a few of the sectors that the use of CF is now common place.
Our design is nod to evolution of cycling which is one of many sports that have been revolutionised by this amazing material. From a design point of view CF also has a very pleasing aesthetic value. Our design is deliberately minimalist. A combination of CF, wood and steel has resulted in a very unique watch. No two watches are are the same, material properties such as grain structure and fibre orientation have allowed us to produce one of time pieces.
Each Evolution Carbon watch case is hand moulded. A mould is filled with random fibres, resin added then cured under pressure and heat to create Forged Carbon Fibre. A Hickory inlay is pressed into the case a steel inner case bonded in place before finishing with CNC machining. We fit a Swiss Ronda quartz movement, a sapphire glass is pressed in and finally we attach our custom soft silicone strap to complete the watch.
The Velotime Evolution Carbon watch is a limited edition of 300 watches.
